RE: Transfer rumours - Plato - 06-01-2021

Wow - this thread was getting more depressing to me everytime I logged on !  Now Liam Daly is leaving ??  Each time that lad has worn the 'City' shirt has left me proud as punch because it showed the non-league world we mean business.  I had greatly underestimated how much I enjoyed seeing us at the top of the league this season and this was perpetrated by the emergence of those teams just below us.  We have been very fortunate as of late with some scorelines going our way resulting in draws and occasional losses from our nearest rivals.  Great ! long may it continue ?  But then I read Alex's comment (from memory) - "we are planning for the future and not just tomorrow - our aim is not to go down but finish above 17th place.  That would be progress".  Those words made me push my 'reset' button and when I did the 'Top of the League light went out' !  Holes left by Players leaving for other clubs (for whatever reason) are almost impossible to fill in a season of Covid and no regular income source through the turnstiles.  As already mentioned somewhere in this thread, these sort of problems go with the territory of being successfull and in normal circumstances they can sometimes be counterbalanced by throwing money at the problem - but these Covid days ain't 'normal circumstances' ?  That's why I have taken Alex's comments on board and I'm currently now looking at that 17th spot and how far we are away from it for the rest of the season.  Already we have been given enough happy memories to be talking about it for years to come ..... "Do you remember the year we were still top of the league at Christmas etc etc" and yet I am as isatiable as the next Fan to want more & more of the same.  My heart might be still up there at the top of the League but my sights are now firmly affixed to that 17th spot and how far we finish above it ?  Anything else is a bonus - surely ?

Harrison's official (well on twitter anyway).  Yes..he played a few games after Spencer Hamilton was injured early last season.  Neat and tidy, one of our better loanees. But  then he suffered a nasty injury up at Gateshead and went back to Bristol City.  He's been keeping Spence out of the team at Chippenham.

Vinny was great!  OK he struggled a bit defensively, though was beginning to learn on the job, but as a winger he was more often than not our main creative force during the first part of the season.  He had energy and pace to burn and could make a decent replacement for Whittle. Got a bad head injury against Spenny and didn't survive the change of management.  Then had unsuccessful loan spells elsewhere.  Looks like he's back languishing at Bristol City at present. He seemed to enjoy his time with us and his family and gf used to come to most of the games.

Watching Vinny’s fearless approach made standing in the cold & piss wet through at Evesham bearable

I wouldn't despair too much - we are top of the league and if we don't finish top we can still be hopeful of a play-off place (although I take on board the implications of key players leaving, which is disheartening). Alex has set out his ambitions for the club elsewhere, including looking at the budget required for the next level. Clearly there is a ceiling for any budget - on Liam Daly, Alex mentioned that Barnet can offer more, which football being what it is you can't blame LD. If Covid hadn't struck we could have hoped for large crowds to help fill the coffers and expand the budget to help our ambitions. If we don't have the budget to take us up to the next level, and more importantly, stay there and move on up further, then there's no point in going up. I'd prefer to stay at this level and get promoted when we're ready, rather than go up and drop straight back down again, which judging by the fortunes of some clubs that's happened to isn't a good thing.

Quite so Paul

I appreciate AP's honesty but I can't believe we thought we'd be in this good a position at this stage in the season with a genuine chance for promotion. Surely at least try and keep our better players for one season to see the job through and then cash in on them. I understand the financial situation but surely promotion must be worth something. A revolving door for players is never a good reputation to have as a club!

RE: Transfer rumours - Pims manager again - 06-01-2021

Welcome Tom, you are the first signing under the PG era, young and eager.
We need a few older heads to steady the ship.
Let’s wait and see.

RE: Transfer rumours - Darran - 06-01-2021

We are top of the table and would be under PPG. We should be looking to win the league not talking about being mid-table or as long as we finish 17th. To think I was accused of being negative a few months back. Yes we have lost key players, but we are in a superb position and we have to try and not let that slip. We still have a great chance of promotion and that is what we should be going for.

RE: Transfer rumours - Darran - 07-01-2021

We are still joint favourites to win the league with York.
