RE: Gloucestershire Live - Alex Petheram - 08-04-2020

You're bang on Charlie. For me... BBC Radio Gloucester have been ok and are trying to get better, I'm not a fan of the breakfast show, but over the past couple of weeks they have ran a large slot of the Saturday show with us. I did a full 16 min interview with them the other weekend around our current losses ... along side the C********m and FGR Chairman for example. The breakfast show interviews always get turned into a FGR are better then you .... i've been in there three times for an interview and every time left feeling the same....

Severn Sport I've always found to be good... I listen to their games on us when I'm out the country on the web and we've actively encouraged James to deal with them openly. The post match interviews are excellent! The reason BBC Gloucester aren't reporting at game currently is because we've asked/ wanted Severn Sport to do this, so don't think it's fair on Severn Sport if they are competing next to BBC Gloucester Radio for listeners. So currently Severn Sport Radio are our preferred partner and will be at MP. As we need to reward there loyalty to us this season. I'm not sure what happened before I was involved, but that's water under the bridge. Being very blunt, I've never done a story with Severn Sport yet myself as the written press side lacks followers if you just look at social media followers numbers, but that's something to work on, as the radio side is first class. So maybe we need a meeting to help each other, they could even base themselves out of the new MP maybe ....

Issac is doing a great job with the clubs social media and his posts last night with Matty was another excellent feature. I want to keep pushing our own media more, so we report/ release stories ourselves.

I'm not anti PR or anti Press, I'm anti BS.

I'm not having a pop saying it can't be true.... I was saying.... It is not true. The Non League Paper was wrong to print that. You implied we where getting money with a statement of "At least the PL are giving some money and no doubt we will see some of it"....  This statement was made following my programmes notes on this season, sadly your statement was wrong. This whole story was about money, which clubs get EVERY season within the pyramid, for the 2020/21 season, not the 2019/20 season as it was implying .... The whole press story of the £125m into lower leagues was just misleading at very best, but more then likely just poor reporting.

As for Glos Live ... when they make copy and paste mistakes, from what I wrote to what they print, with the loss number in my 'extended programme notes' as an example, then turn the whole story in to a lifeless negative story, how do you expect me to feel... copying and pasting is surly the easiest thing to get right, heck look at my old school work!

Let me give you some other examples:
Then on the day we start the ground, the paper didn't ask to attend or turn up to take photos like the Indy and BBC did, they in fact panic once they see stories elsewhere and wait for it.... this bit is gold...... take the photo you see them use, of skips with an old digger behind it, from the office building windows behind MP .....  without any consent or asking, in fact the first we knew was when it was printed .... I struggle to work with people that want to report / take photos in such a manor.
Then don't show up to interview or take photos of new players we sign when agreed. Or write a whole story on me when a manager leaves without asking me for a single comment .... then when I complain to them having read the most hurtful story ever, say "you have a right to respond, you can do your own version if you want" ... which I declined as I refused to talk about it publicly, respect people too much and didn't want them to benefit from sales .....
Oh and phone the NL for a story ref a ground share first, without even knowing the time scales and then asking me for to comment on there sources .... which was Colin talking to the press - which I find very wrong also, as I don't feel the league have any right to leak this information without Bath or us consenting .... Oh and break the embargo on the Fabien signing ....

I've raised my points in the past and all I get back from them is threats.... threats of how they'll stop reporting at all on us and publish a story that I blocked them access.... etc etc blah blah blah .... I find it oh so boring, so to say I've a press trust issue is 100% correct. This club has had a number of years of being a PR machine and I'm not sure what that achieved .... and that's also not for me. I don't want to self promote or just create stories ... other then on the 01 April that is.....

I feel the fans get very good communication now... in fact, I feel i'm too open at times and talk to much... this will be another example, I write this and I know you'll come back at me with comments... Sometimes it's hard not to feel that some fans will defend everyone else but me or the club. But what can you do... people will write what they want, fans will sadly believe it... which normally means I or the club get criticised.

You aren't reading what I have put Alex. My first post was when I saw the PL were giving money at that time I wasn't aware that it was just bringing a payment forward. The Non League Paper printed on Sunday that it was the usual August payment being made early. This was separate to the piece about what you had said in your notes. The Non League Paper do a superb job for Non League football.

It is all well making Seven Sport the favoured partners and I have listened to commentary's at work which is great, but in all due respect their reach is nothing like what Radio Glos and Glos Live can do. It is good to see that Radio Glos are becoming more interested in us because as everyone knows they have been shocking over the years unless we have had success when they have jumped on board.

You mention about doing out own press and your blogs are very welcome, but you are preaching to the converted here. How much reach are they going to get outside of hardcore Gloucester City fans? I would also say that you are more likely to get negative press if you decide not to work with them.

Obviously at this time there is going to be more focus in the press on things other than football, but when the time comes it should be all about getting the word out there in the press and not just preaching to the converted.

RE: Gloucestershire Live - SHANDY LOVE MACHINE - 08-04-2020

You make some very good points there Dazzler.

Personally I have been so impressed with Severn Sport and their reach to the lower leagues that I have saved it as a desktop favourite - as a man of habits this is a real achievement for them. People are interested in both the Brimscombes and Thrupps - and not just C********m, Forest Green and the rugby!

Radio Gloucestershire's non coverage and openly ambivalent attitude to Gloucester City over the past 20 years, and their responses to any approaches made to them (even with volunteer support offered) means that they are never on in our house or car. What a cheek that they are now showing interest. This publicly funded organisation will drop us as soon as the stadium is old news.

Shame about GlosLive as amongst the cartel of Robins we also have some City support there. Hope bridges can be unburned as they have a reach I think we would benefit from.

Just been on the phone to a lovely lady from Gloslive so expect some good press ??

RE: Gloucestershire Live - Brandman - 09-04-2020

As I seem to have been ‘unnecessarily maligned’ on more than one occasion in amongst posts around press/media relations, let me put the record straight for those who care to know the truth. In making this post my comments are thus paraphrased and not to be taken as verbatim, so to keep this brief and to the point.

As far back as 7th January the Club publicly announced, via several of its media outlets that it could not meet new grading regulations at Evesham United going forward. It also stated it had to advise the National League by 31st March of an alternative plan to cover the possibility of Meadow Park not being ready to host matches at the start of the 2020/21 season. Bath City was named as an option.

https://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/gloucester-city-confident-return-home-3715077

Since then there may have been further comment by the Club on this subject matter but that is not relevant to this post.

On 31st March following further comment from the Club and again shared on the Club website et al more detail was made as to Bath City.

I then received an enquiry from Gloucestershire Live asking whether GCAFC had met the deadline and had approval been given for a ground share with Bath City. It was stated their enquiry was a follow up to the news from the Club.

As the Club and myself had been in numerous discussions (it is my role for the NL) to ensure all compliance had been met and a simple factual question was being asked, it was responded in a positive manner.
“Yes the Club had complied and approval was hopefully expected later that day”.

When asked if I could advise on anything further about the ground share or advise when approval was given, I stated that should be a request to the Club. I think that is clearly demonstrated in their article they published as to an approach to the Club.

The type of response given is nothing strange and would be the same if it came in for another Club in the country.

In all my dealings with the GCAFC on grading I have conducted myself in the appropriate professional manner and have been mindful of the fact of my past association with the Club and of course where I live. My role responsibility at the NL has always been to assist the Club in difficult circumstances at this time, as any others in membership.

I do not intend to say anymore on the subject and people can check the Club media outlets etc and in this specific matter the articles linked above in Gloucestershire Live if you wish to establish fact.

My experience tells me that football clubs often fall out with the media/press for lots of reasons and I have witnessed clubs even banning access to matches etc as a form of retaliation. Such moves are dangerous. I personally may not always agree with actions or views expressed on either side, yet I appreciate many often feel a Club does not receive or get what it thinks it should from the local media but that is a matter for debate on another day.

Thank you for letting me put the record straight. I will not comment further and disconnect from COF.

Nothing like the weasel words of an accomplished bureaucrat... Shame on the reporter for not going to the club direct.- apart from anything else who knows whether this was commercially sensitive at the time? Shame on the bureaucrat for living in a Yes Minister world of nods winks and blaming it on someone else.

RE: Gloucestershire Live - Lee - 09-04-2020

If we want people through the gates when Meadow Park opens then we're going to need Glos Live and BBC Radio Gloucestershire on side. Severn Sport are great at what they do but don't have nearly the same reach as these outlets.

The blogs are great but chatty and full of in jokes (which I appreciate is your style) so in the absense of official press releases they are what the press are going to print. Write and send them official press releases then speak to them on the phone afterwards and they should write what you want them to write.

I agree we need them onside, I looked
on twitter to see how many followers they have:
BBC Glos-77k
Glos Live-29k
SS-2k
I imagine Facebook and Instagram is along the same lines.
But from Glos Live I always expected more
interest in the new ground but they don’t seem
interested.

RE: Gloucestershire Live - Lee - 09-04-2020

Head of online is a Gloucester City supporter, of course they're interested

Alex has already said he doesn't answer the phone to them anymore so maybe they stopped ringing? Alex has put all the info in a blog so how could any of it be sensitive info? The NLP decided to focus on the Bath news and highlighted how far Spennymoor and Blyth would have to travel to get to Bath. As Lee says the blogs are great for City fans and we know Alex's style, but I read a lot of posts from chairman/owners on clubs website and they are written very differently. Any non regular's looking in probably find the posts very odd. This is where a proper press release to would provide the serious info for people we will be hoping will come when the ground is built.

Maybe Glos Live aren't interested because the club aren't interested in them? I think it is fair to say we need Glos Live more than Glos Live need us.
