One for the rugger buggers.

Why have they gone pop? Do they get piss poor crowds?

Imagine the rest of the clubs in the league going to the wall and only Glawster are left, they still wouldn't win anything!

Outgoings more than incomings. Their owner won't bankroll them anymore, and has been unable to sell the club. American investors showed interest but were not able to raise the capital, apparently.

Gloucester av. attendance 22/23 = 14194 (4th highest in Premiership)

LI av. attendance 22/23 = 9110 (share at Brentford AFC)

Not a rugby fan at all, but the sport appears to be unsustainable financially.
Despite salary caps being introduced almost 25yrs ago most premiership clubs were running at an annual loss of £4million before Covid. Wasps for example were spending 103% of income on wages in 2014.
Total premiership club debts were over £500million in Oct22, including ~£140million of combined Wasps & Worcester debts (about a third of it to the taxman). Total revenues a few years before were ~£220milion.
LondonIrish owe approximately £30million, only £1million is to HMRC.
Still to come is the findings from the class action on negligence from neurological impairments due to concussion. Former pro’s & amateurs are involved

I had no idea that they played at Brentford.

Yep, played at the new Brentford Stadium this past season. Prior to that they were at The Madjewski at Reading for quite a few years.

Financial problems (with most/all clubs) started when people like Steve Lansdown (Bristol), Bruce Craig (Bath), Nigel Wray (Saracens) began throwing stupid money into their vanity projects, others tried to keep up and sadly end up living way outside their means.

Thankfully Glawster have a very astute and careful owner so hopefully are very unlikely to fall by the wayside.
