Excuse the pun but that article contains some absolute rubbish:

There aren’t that many species of tree on the planet (~73,000) and native UK tree species number around 50. Great fact checking BBC.

I suppose they might as well try to put it to some useful purpose. 

The fact that it's built on the flood plain (the clue's in the name) makes that side of the City more likely to flood seems to be immaterial to the powers that be.

They'll be building football grounds in the flood plain next!

We should probably have moved to somewhere else, rather than raising the pitch above the surrounding properties making them more likely to flood.
