GL1 and Oxstalls Sports Centre -
Judith - 29-09-2023
Have just read that Aspire who run GL1 and Oxstalls has gone into liquidation. Both are closed with immediate effect and staff made redundant.

Just read that too. How well patronised were they? I haven't been to the leisure centre since well before it reopened in 2001!

I'm a member. Or should that be was. I feel for the staff who were great. The gym always had people in and there were people checking in for the swimming whenever I passed through the reception. It's a sad day for a city our size to lose this facility. The Council claim the company running it pulled out at the last minute but it should never have come to a situation where that was a possibility.

It's going to remain closed for a year by all accounts.

Got to be honest I alway found the staff to be beyond useless and disinterested. Could have seen this coming a mile off.

Shame. We are a city of well over 100,000. We need to have an affordable public facility like this, alongside the private clubs for those who want to pay more for it. How can we be serious about tackling health issues if we don't have accessible affordable facilities for those who want to or are persuaded to get fit.
I can't see it remaining closed for too long, the facilities are mostly very good and some of them have only recently been built. I imagine the more profitable elements will be hived off and the rest left to rot without profit or subsidy.
Sunak's Britain.

From the local news sources it seems that it will take about a year to sort this mess out

The tennis courts and astroturf at Oxstalls seemed to be in regular use. They’d only just put in solar panels and a ground-sourced heat pump, presumably at significant expense: I presume they won’t have done that for a facility with no long term future.

I ran a game on the Oxstalls 7G until recently, and played under its new organisation. Not that busy, but all the Gloucester Schools use it, and reasonably priced. Good facility, well maintained.
Unlike GL1 where I use the Heath Spa. You can't even close the door to the sauna (letting out most of the heat!) and it takes month to get any repairs done. This was a sign.....

As of yet there's been no explanation as to why it will take a year. The council may think we'll have forgotten by then. I just used the gym and can in fact find cheaper alternatives but that's really not the point. The city needs a facility accessible to most. They bang on about mental health, obesity and NHS waiting lists. Shame on our local council.
It's so bad that even Shandy's getting serious. I tell you we're all doomed.
