Is It a coincidence that with all the off the field drama we have started to pick Up some results on the pitch?
This club performs better when we are Up against It.

I do get the feeling that last season the manager and players felt like they were rallying against Alex as well as wanting to do it for the fans.

Matty mentions when we signed Asante and I think he is right. The football we played whilst he and the others were with us was incredible and we fully deserved to be top of the table. I think that has partly led to unrealistic expectations ever since and that some people just want more and more money thrown at the problem regardless of if the man doing it can actually afford to do it.

Isn't that understandable, though. That's natural in sport. We want to win. How good have you felt since Saturday? We played well and won! I was on cloud 9, personally, much to the chagrin of my daughters who think I'm nuts. Two on the spin is a great feeling. Just wait until it's 22 in a calendar year, like my Villans!

Winning needs to happen within some spending limits, but lack of investment leads to relegation. None of us want that.

As a measure of that theory Darran, on here the longer match threads are when we lose. When we win they tend to be much shorter. I think some fans just like a good moan and losing enables that Wink

Think that probably has some truth to it although the Spennymoor one is big. Over the years there has been some massive over reactions to defeats.

On the Asante point I think that's part of it. But let's not lose sight of the fact that he only played 10 games for us.. all of which were behind closed doors (Christchurch away had fans maybe?). I don't think he had that big an impact on the wider potential supporter base... Albeit it was exciting for those who had watched City at our various places of exile.

If the ground was open, however, I am sure attendances would been good at that time. It was classic Gloucester City bad timing which seems drawn to us like a magnet.

That season didn't feel real.. it may as well have not happened at all.

In my eyes we're still new(ish) into the city and there's a blank canvas. Forget about the rugby and other football teams.. we have a chance to write our own story. Whether it's a thriller or a horror is now down to what happens next. Important decisions for AP et. al.

People would have been aware we were top though even if they weren't watching the games. I think the reason we were top was behind the fact so many turned up to the home games at the start of the following season. Clearly us coming home was a big attraction, but it wouldn't surprise me if plenty were thinking we would carry on where we were when the season before ended.

Correct. The expectation was that we would continue to be a table-topping side the season after null & void. It started off well enough, beating York City, and then went downhill under PG - another case of appointing the wrong manager. Like TF his preseason recruitment was poor.

York City was an unbelievable day, 2000+ people, beautiful weather, a 4-0 performance, one of the best goals I've seen live at a football game in Matt McClure's chip.  Feels a world away now. Ironic when you consider they actually went up.

The void season always felt like a calculated gamble to me that didn't quite pay off.  If you are going to go all in on buying promotion, you may as well go all in during a season when almost every other team is tightening their belts.  Even then though I felt like we might have been in a slightly false position.  James Rowe had put together possibly the best starting XI the club has ever had, but it did feel like there wasn't much else coming up behind it.  You do wonder if the season had actually run its course whether we'd have had enough to maintain a title charge.

But it also helps explain why we didn't just carry on from where we left off, even though our budget was similar the next season, others will have returned to normal levels of spending.
