World Cup

For those of us who follow the Women's game the fun and excitement of the World Cup is now just days away.  Although the tournament is down in Australia the KO times for the Lionesses group games have not worked out badly; believe its 10.30 on Saturday that we ko.

Can the Lionesses win?  Absolutely we can.  Slight problem is though there are quite a few other sides who think the same thing and with good cause; Germany, Spain and the USA in particular imo.  I think Australia will go deep into the competition as well. Then we have Brazil!! Loosing Leah and Beth has been a big knock to us and of course we don't have Ellen or Jill either.  But we've some very talented youngsters in Lauren and Katie coming into the squad.  Rach playing up front this time is exciting, Jordan missed out on the Euros with injury and is one heck of a player to have on your side.  Personally I think its tremendous that Beth E is back and I am sure if she's given the opportunities she will be a star of the tournament; my outside bet for the golden Boot.

Probably though the most important result though will be what tournament can bring to raise the profile of the game up another notch again both at the WSL level but down the pyramid to grass roots too.

A winning start and some goals on Saturday after what's not been the best of build ups and we'll be on our way.  Can't wait.

I think we're going to struggle to get past the quarters this time with the key injuries we've got

We are in the World Cup Final.  I am much older than most of you and have waited over 50 years to be able to say that and it sounds really good, if still a little unbelievable.  This does not happen to us....but this time it has.  We are in the World Cup Final.

Can we win it now? Spain will be one very tough nut to crack.  But our team spirit, togetherness, belief and preparation is just different level.  Performances have been getting better game on game, we've got no weak links and in Sarina we have the very best.  Can we win it.  Oh yes we can.

The lift what they've done already will lift the women's game to an even higher level than the Euros win and that made a stellar difference.  Exciting times.

Like you I'm old enough to be able to remember England win a World Cup Final. I watched it in a bar in France on a school trip! All the French patrons were supporting Germany!

I watched it live too, all in glorious black & white on our 17"TV. Later on saw extended highlights in colour in the Regal cinema.

"Nobby Styles for Prime Minister" was the commentator's excited exclamation during celebrations at the end, a vote there and then would have secured it too for Nobby, no question!

To me World Cup only means one thing. I chortled when the Citizen tried to call the Rugby World Cup the World Cup.

Good luck to the ladies, I can't call them Lionesses, they're England Ladies or nothing.

I hope the centre-half doesn't keep stepping off the attacker like she did for the Australia goal the other day in the Final.

Agreed, she won't get away with against Spain

Well, not to be in the end.  Yes, a sense of disappointment but also pride as we did after all reach the Final which many did not expect at the start of the tournament and which many England teams have failed to achieve over the years.

Big thanks to Dave and Michael for opening up the TT for the Final.  Not the biggest crowd but added to the occasion and the bacon baps were excellent.

Thought we were second best team out there today.

Might have been different if the attempt that hit the bar early on had gone in?

Looks like there will only be one World Cup winning football team in my lifetime  Sad

This shows that for an England team to win a World Cup, it needs a quota of players with comb-overs and dodgy teeth.
