No Room for You - Charlie
#1

This is a response to Neil's previous musicians from Gloucester thread and a request to Charlie. Probably to be met by tumbleweed...

Other than the music for the US national anthem I'd wager that the piece of music most played internationally by a band from Gloucester - from the UK to Indonesia, the former Yugoslavia, the USA and various other places is 'No Room for You' by Demob, who started off in 1978 playing gigs at the Viking Youth Club in Coney Hill.

The song is a defiant number about the closure of a popular local venue, Whitcombe Lodge (now the site of the Chase Hotel or whatever it's called now). It suits us as a club given all the club has been through. It would be great to hear it played at every City home match (Charlie) - it's unlikely that the rugby club would ever include it in their half-time ditties.

It's on Spotify. It's a catchy number (no rude words). Granted it's not to everyone's taste, but neither are Arianna Grande or EMF. At least in my book.

So, Charlie, can you add it to the music list? If you're sceptical about its international popularity here are some links, including the Gloucester version. There's even a country and western version and one played by a ukele band.

Kud Idijoti (only 570k views) : https://youtu.be/c3ftQ9ln1Qo?si=ZTtNVzCns5zALjiN

All female ukelele band version: https://youtu.be/fYiggRj5BVQ?si=nIo-Yn2vbeuhbtga

Some blokes copying them: https://youtu.be/tm0nQ3xeogk?si=6F9YMpCbFk3NEbk_

Indonesia (a pretty grim version tbh): https://youtu.be/dupWps1S9hU?si=mQBX1Jd1w7BEVLYq

I could add more - but think you get the picture. Gloucester's biggest musical export - they've toured the US, Europe, and Japan. A bit like Gloucester City, they're not much celebrated in their home town, hence why we should be adopting 'No Room for You'. I rest my case.

Didn’t mind the ukulele version.

Sticking around a while yet, thanks to a gift from a generous angel.

Yes, he was the drummer - saw him in the Tall Ship recently. He (unintentionally) wrecked our drumkit when he stumbled on our band practice at Chequers Bridge and decided to join in (a long time ago).

I hope you apologised for it being in the way. I would have. Smile

Profusely!

This bunch of middle-aged Aston Villa fans are playing it on their ukeleles. It's our song not theirs:

I'd be quite up for a Gloucester City ukelele band playing this if there were any musos amongst the supporters. I'm sure the T-End choir would provide a fitting accompaniment.  Smile

Thanks for the suggestion Paul, I’m starting to think you really like this song!
The matchday playlist is usually about 130 minutes long, doubled for double headers with Truro so I can definitely find a way to get it on.
But it’s probably something that needs a little more prominence than just being chucked on at 1pm. At the moment I’m thinking it would be perfect at FT, but I’ll have a think for the Chester and Scunthorpe games.
Cheers.

I think it sounds like 4 drunk, and quite angry 15yo’s practicing in their Dad’s garage, but music is very subjective! Big Grin

Subjective - true. At the moment the mood music is more like Faure's Requiem! Sick
