90s chants
#1

Some absolute furore on twitter about Millwall fans chanting "Let him die" to the Palace player yesterday. Is anyone really offended by this and how would they have coped with some of the things we used to chant back in the day?

It's all good humour to me, what is it, the funeral march followed be DIE! to an injured opponent, or you're going home in a Gloucester ambulance.

And wasn't there a fan chucked out at our game at Wrexham for chanting what we used to do versus AFC Newport back in the 90s?!!

Snowflakes Wink

I doubt anyone would care if that chant was directed at 99% of incidents when a player goes down and spends a couple of minutes lolling around on the turf before carrying on like nothing’s happened. That defender going down for an eternity during the Brackley playoff game springs to mind.

It’s the other 1% where you can understand why people might feel uncomfortable - the Christian Eriksen incident at the Euros being the obvious example.  I haven’t seen the Crystal Palace incident.

To be fair, you'd have had to have been a proper bastard to chant anything at that point Wink

I think the difference with Mateta here is he received a huge blow to the temple, he’s very lucky to have not died.
Wouldn’t expect anything else from Millwall.

Yep, context is king.  Blokes been fly kicked to the side of the head with great force.  Ended up with 20 odd stitches in his ear and the mad thing is you'd probably consider that a lucky result given the challenge.  I've no real issue in general with the chant, but in this instance I think it was pretty crass and definitely not needed.

Then again if you listen to Joey Barton its not even a foul!

Anyone who listens to Joey Barton and agrees with literally anything he says has probably suffered the same sort of kick in the head to be honest.

He said that it was a foul by the keeper, if you watch it back the keeper gets the ball, it's hardly Harald Schumacher on Battiston!

It's not that far off, IMO.  Call me a snowflake, but if you are going to challenge like that, then you owe your fellow professional a duty of care.  He has got it horribly wrong.  I don't want to see him vilified because you make those decisions in a split second, and I am sure there was no malice in there, but it is a very very very poor challenge.
