Bring back the fans

Difficult to justify preventing small numbers of fans watching their local club. I wonder with some of the decisions made on covid, spin the wheel and today it's x can open, nothing to do with logic or science. Surely 50 fans in the open air at a western league game is safe

It's a perception thing though as they wouldn't want to risk a football game being the cause of an outbreak however unlikely that would be. Not saying it's right but it is clear the government are trying to right the wrongs of allowing big sporting events to take place in March. Step 7 games were able to have fans to start with but then there were games with more than 100 people at they had to put a stop to it. It's the governments decision to not have anyone at a sporting event at the moment and I guess we will find out this week if that is to change or not. I can see them starting trials, but I would be surprised if they allow a blanket opening even for Step 7.

How can pubs be open though with people inside and almost certainly closer together but not Western league clubs who get less than 50 fans outside. It was shown the other day pubs are not enabling track and trace.
Where is the logic?

Agreed. Fans are even allowed back at snooker from next week.

I guess the question is - should fans be allowed back at all matches up to Premier League? Whilst it's undeniably safe at Western League level, a busy Old Trafford is a different story. If a line is to be drawn, where should it be?

If all fans pledged not to get excited, sing & shout then it would probably be fine to let fans in. With  fans activity, the virus could potentially spread more, breathing heavier increasing the emission and ingestion of viral particles. Nightclubs aren’t open for the same reasoning, nor indoor performances (singing in church etc...).
I’m not saying it’s right, but they have their reasoning and like joe says, where is the cut-off point? They could use National League and below as trials, but the money higher up the pyramid would be fearful of losing their audiences to us lot.

Clubs that have cricket pitches next to them are moaning that they can have people watching, but they can't. Problem is you can go and watch your local cricket for free, but to go and watch football you are in some sort of enclosed space and you would have to pay to get in. To me it isn't the same thing at all no matter how safe it would be to go to the football game. At the end of the day we are talking about pre-season friendlies which aren't going to be attracting that many people anyway. At the end of the day non-league football clubs are by far the only area of business that is suffering right now and all will be wanting help. It might be harsh, but the Government have bigger things to think about than if a Step 7 side can have people go and watch them or not.

If only the Gov had some sort of department for sport that could deal with these things.

If only the govt had some kind of plan for dealing with a viral outbreak....oh hang on, they did...herd immunity, shaking hands is fine, no heed immunity without vaccination, don’t shake hands.

Yes and I see dorking are asking for him to resign if he doesn’t allow crowds into non league football by Monday. Rightly or wrongly all football is being treated the same. Again he’s got a lot to deal with as well. The government have said October 1st for weeks now so why is it a surprise to clubs that they aren’t allowed fans. Would have helped if leagues had all accepted they couldn’t start until October so teams weren’t playing friendlies already.

And there’s this. Absolute shower from the Tories.
