On this day

1st November 1997.

On this date, GCAFC played Away to Rothwell Town. This was a Dr Martens Premier Division fixture. The attendance was 252, and the game ended in a 1 - 1 draw. The scorer for City was Andy Hoskins.

  1st November 2003.

Now a case of De Ja Vu. Again on the 1st November, but in 2003, GCAFC again played Away to Rothwell Town. This was an FA Trophy 1st Round fixture. The attendance was 137, and this match also ended in a 1 - 1 draw. Have a guess who City's goalscorer was. Yes, that's right,
Andy Hoskins.

The real question is - did he put the goalkeeper in the net as well as the ball?  Tongue

I was at the second one for sure. Probably one of the first games I took photos at.

Just to add, on this day 31 years ago we played at home to Dynamo Minsk!

Remember watching the game from over the car park wall ( Band from the ground at the time ) for having a go at Les Alderman a couple of weeks before ?

4th November 1971.

Wishing former GCAFC striker Dale Watkins a Very Happy Birthday. Dale was signed by Leroy Rosenior for the 1996/97 season. Dale would go onto have a fantastic season with us, scoring 35 goals, and forming a fantastic strike partnership with Adie Mings.
This season was memorable, but unfortunately ended in heartbreak. Dale was sold to C********m Town, where he formed a strike partnership with another former GCAFC striker Jason Eaton.
He was with us for just the one season, but he is one of my favourite GCAFC strikers. Just wish we could have had him for a bit longer.

  4th November 1996.

Today is also the Birthday of another former GCAFC striker, Colby Bishop. We signed Colby on loan from Notts County. Colby would later sign for Worcester City, but can now be seen playing at Accrington Stanley in League One.

My first ever away game. I talked my dad into taking us to Worcester City; we lost 0-2 after John Shaw let a shot through his hands and former City striker Melvyn Langford or Andy Preece got the second.

Had no idea how to find the ground so asked a pissed up postie, at about 2pm so he'd had a good session after work. He was useless. Ended up seeing and old geezer wearing a Worcester scarf so gave him a lift for directions!

Hate to think how many I've been to since!

Also in 2006, it's easy to underetimate how good our 1-0 FA Trophy win against a very strong Margate team was. The Flying Postman played for us for one game only. Many won't have known this but he was acting as our assistant manager under Paul Groves last season.

5th November 1976.

Wishing former GCAFC player, youth team coach, Neil Mustoe a Very Happy Birthday.
'Muzzie' started off at Manchester United. In 1995, I went to watch West Bromwich Albion Reserves play Man Utd Reserves, at the Hawthorns, on a Thursday night. Brian McCair played in that match, as I believe Neil Mustoe did.

6th November 2000 we suffered FA Cup heartbreak at home to Havant & Waterlooville. Will Steadman did something to hand the tie to the visitors. Can't remember what though!

edit - had a penalty saved in injury time

9th November 1967.

Wishing former GCAFC player and manager Chris Burns a Very Happy Birthday. Chris was signed by Leroy Rosenior early in the 1996/97 season. He was to prove to be an asset in the midfield, along with Simon Cooper and David Webb.
He was to later become GCAFC manager. When he was appointed, he had to build a team. He got together the ex GCAFC Youth Team players, and formed what was to become a brilliant team. I believe that Chris was the start of our rise to where we are now.
Chris used to play for Portsmouth. He was a member of the 1992 team that reached the FA Cup Semi Final. They played Liverpool in the Semi Final, at Arsenal's Highbury Stadium. Portsmouth had a good team with Darren Anderton, Andy Awford, John Beresford, Guy Whittingham, Kit Symons.

November 9th 1985; my first ever City game. I was 12.

I saw something in the paper "Free Football". City were playing Loughborough Students in a friendly. My brother had told me that City actually held the record for highest ever win when they won 102-0. Who'd have thought he'd have turned out to be a liar?

The firendly ended 0-0, I recognised Big Dave from school. I couldn't wait to get home.
